Review from Metal-Archives

Pavor...let me tell you about Pavor. Pavor is an anomoly to even the most seasoned death metal fanatic. Pavor has no record label, has never had a record label, and by all accounts and their own statements never wish to have a record label. They've been playing for over a decade and not until very recently have they even had a deal for ANYONE to distribute their music.

Pavor is, unequivocally, the most talented death metal band I have ever heard. The most technical, without a doubt. I was fortunate enough to come across Furioso on Ebay, and it was one of the best finds I ever made. Rainer Landfermann is better known for his contributions to Bethlehem, but Pavor blows everything else Rainer has done out of the water. His bass solos on Furioso are unmatched by any death metal bass player I have ever heard, the sheer speed at which he plays pains my own hands just to think of how fast his are moving.

Not since the days of Masse Bromberg in Osculum Obscenum era Hypocrisy, or Jared Anderson era Morbid Angel, has there been such an utterly brutal and uncompromising vocalist such as Claudius Schwartz. It is necessary to not that all of the vocals on this album, which range from inhuman to impossible, were all done naturally with the aid of nothing but Claudius' own vocal chords and hatred. From the very opening seconds of the very first song, Inflictor of Grimness, you know that something very special is happening.

If I can sum up Furioso, Pavor has put bands like Nile and Hate Eternal to shame with their unbeatable skill and technicality, (and I LOVE Nile and Hate Eternal, don't get me wrong) with brilliant lyrics and the absolute mastery of hate and aggression. Check out Inflictor of Grimness, A Schizoid Uglifier, Inconsisten ClayBlood Totemist, and Dilettante's Dilemma (where Landfermann shows just how insanely good he is on bass).

If I can quote Pavor themselves: "To all wimps, dilettantes, kiddies, fakes, and other boring lowlifes out there that keep making fools of themselves by trying to be evil, brutal or even musically relevant: STAY AT HOME AND PRACTICE!"

That's a bold statement, but when you're the best, you're the best!
